West Sumbawa Regency (KSB) lies on a drought-prone island, yet evidence on remote sensing-based drought monitoring for the area has not been synthesised. This review maps the available remote sensing drought indices, assesses the adequacy of the evidence for KSB, and derives policy implications. A systematic review following PRISMA 2020 was conducted in October 2026 for publications from 2016 to 2026. Nineteen documents were synthesised (14 empirical studies and 5 reviews). Only one study was located in KSB, and it used NDVI to map vegetation-fire potential rather than a calibrated drought index; another study in Sumbawa Regency used NDDI with CHIRPS rainfall. Dominant approaches were satellite-rainfall SPI, VCI/TCI/VHI, TVDI and NDDI, while independent validation was rarely reported. We propose a tiered framework: CHIRPS-SPI and MODIS VHI for routine monitoring, Landsat–Sentinel-2 NDDI/TVDI for land-level detail, and validation against rain gauges and disaster-agency reports. KSB should define a minimum operational index, trigger thresholds for alert status, and a local validation basis.
