Abstract

The designation of the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has driven coastal development that pressures mangroves in Kuta Mandalika, Central Lombok, while mangrove ecotourism is planned in the zone masterplan. This study assesses the readiness of Mandalika mangroves as an ecotourism base through a focused literature review of six empirical studies on the Lombok coast (2020–2025) and re-analysis of secondary data. Mangrove area in the SEZ declined from 74.49 ha (2013) to 54.85 ha (2023), a 27.7% loss at about 2.06 ha/year, mainly due to conversion to roads and built land. The multidimensional sustainability index was 48.63 (less sustainable), with the lowest score in the ecological dimension (37.01) and the highest in the social dimension (54.94). As benchmarks, Ketapang Raya in East Lombok had a Tourism Suitability Index of 1.28 (not suitable) because of low thickness and density, whereas Cendi Manik in West Lombok reached 87.33% (highly suitable). No suitability or carrying capacity study for Mandalika was found. We propose an integrated framework that places boundary designation, a management body, and an ecological suitability baseline before ecotourism facilities are built.
