By regulation, protection forest carries the strictest use restrictions and production forest the loosest. This study examines whether that ordering is reflected in the performance of community forestry (HKm) groups in the Maria Donggomasa Forest Management Unit (BKPH), West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. A questionnaire survey (March–June 2026) covered 275 households in three groups: Kapari Lestari (protection forest, “very advanced”; n = 135), Batawawi (production forest, “advanced”; n = 85), and Kapenta Nanganae (production forest, “not yet advanced”; n = 55). Household income and woody land cover were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test. Mean income in Kapari Lestari (IDR 63.32 million/year) was nearly double that of Batawawi (IDR 31.92 million) and Kapenta Nanganae (IDR 27.38 million); woody cover was 67.84% versus 36.21% and 29.64% (P < 0.001). Kapari Lestari differed significantly from both other groups, whereas Batawawi and Kapenta Nanganae did not differ. The pattern is consistent with institutional maturity mattering more than forest-area status; however, because status and group are confounded, their effects cannot be separated statistically.
