Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving is a crucial 21st-century competency, yet it remains challenging for elementary school students, particularly in Riau Province. This quantitative experimental study investigated the effectiveness of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into Quizizz to enhance students’ mathematical problem-solving skills with a Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) orientation. The participants were 64 fourth-grade students at SDN 002 Pasir Limau Kapas, equally assigned to an experimental group (n = 32) using Quizizz AI Quiz Generator and Adaptive Feedback, and a control group (n = 32) using conventional non-AI digital quizzes. Data were obtained through a validated and reliable standardized essay test based on Polya’s four problem-solving stages: understanding the problem, planning a solution, executing the plan, and reviewing the answer. The instrument demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.86). Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, an independent-samples t-test, and Normalized Gain (N-Gain). The experimental group obtained a significantly higher post-test mean (84.25 ± 7.12) than the control group (69.50 ± 8.45; p < 0.001). The experimental group also achieved a higher N-Gain score (0.71) than the control group (0.42). These findings indicate that AI-supported Quizizz effectively enhances elementary students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities through adaptive and interactive learning.
