Abstract

The Ketungau Basin in West Kalimantan is classified as an unexplored basin, although geological, seismic, and non-seismic data are available for petroleum system evaluation. This study evaluates the geochemical characteristics and source rock potential of the Ketungau and Kantu Formations using Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Rock-Eval Pyrolysis. The analyses were conducted to determine organic matter abundance, source rock quality, kerogen type, hydrocarbon generation potential, and thermal maturity. The results show that samples AF 01 and AF 02 from the Ketungau Formations have excellent organic matter abundance, good source rock quality, and type III kerogen with gas-prone characteristics. In contrast, the remaining samples in Ketungau and Kantu Formations are dominated by type IV kerogen (inertinite) with poor source rock quality and low hydrocarbon generation potential. Based on Tmax, four samples are classified as immature, five as mature, and one as post-mature. Interpretation of the Production Index (PI) versus Tmax diagram indicates the presence of hydrocarbon staining/contamination in five samples and inert carbon in four samples, supporting the thermal maturity interpretation. Overall, only a limited number of samples exhibit favorable source rock characteristics, while most contain degraded or inert organic matter. These findings provide valuable geochemical information for petroleum system evaluation and future hydrocarbon exploration in the Ketungau Basin
