Abstract

Drought is an environmental phenomenon that is an ongoing challenge in East Sumba Regency, located in East Nusa Tenggara, which is distinguished by a semi-dry climate that shows little rainfall and prolonged dry season. This climate condition has a direct impact on the livelihood of the population, especially in terms of limited access to drinking water and dependence on the agricultural sector for rainfall. This research aims to analyse the drought phenomenon in East Sumba in the perspective of Islamic ecotheology, by examineing its relationship as sunnatullah and its implications for human responsibility in maintaining environmental balance. The method used is qualitative with a literature study approach through climatological data analysis, population conditions, and Islamic sources. Research findings show that the dry conditions observed in East Sumba are intrinsically related to sunnatullah, which is related to climate dynamics and geographical attributes of the area. Nonetheless, the adverse ramifications of this occurrence are intensified by the advent of ecosystem management methodologies that are detrimental and devoid of a sustainable long-term outlook. From the point of view of Islamic ecotheology, this event is considered not only as a natural event but also as a result of disjunction in human interaction with the environment, as articulated in the Al-Qur'an. This is why we urgently need a fresh approach—one that marries environmental science with Islamic values. By bringing faith into the conversation, we can build a deeper sense of moral duty and shape a truly sustainable way to look after our natural resources. The results of this investigation are anticipated to provide a theoretical framework for local governments and the community in the development of strategies aimed at drought mitigation, with an emphasis on environmental preservation, sustainable water resource management, and increasing ecological awareness in East Sumba Regency.
